Choosing a Trade

To choose the one for you, assess your interests and skills.

  • Talk to your parents, teachers and tradespeople for advice.
  • Consult local employers to find out what trades are in demand.
  • Visit a college campus to see trades training facilities and find out what pre-apprenticeship opportunities are available.

The provincial chapters of Skills/Compétences Canada offer discovery programs to expose young people to a variety of trades and technology fields. A can’t-miss event is their annual National Skills Competition. In a different region each year, you can attend at no charge and see over 500 competitors demonstrating their abilities in over 40 skills areas.
